San Luis Obispo, CA - There’s a new club in town. Founded by a barber and esthetician power couple, Hair Skin Club introduces a new self-care concept offering haircuts and facials for the whole family.

“After living in SLO for over 15 years, I don’t think there’s anything quite like it. We’re not your typical barbershop, salon or spa, but we’re deeply inspired by those spaces” said co-owner Matthew Mendoza. “Kelly and I always knew we’d open up a hybrid concept together and the opportunity finally presented itself.”

Hair Skin Club is located in the Broad Street Village shopping center and continues a legacy handed off by the previous tenant. The 700 square foot space was home to Gypsy and Oak Salon until they moved to a new location.

When talking more about the studio, Matthew shared “The space was perfect for our vision. We needed a treatment room for Kelly and shampoo bowls to be able to offer certain hair services. It was the perfect space for us to transform.”

This business concept was born from the couple’s shared vision of creating a third space for the whole family. For years, Kelly had clients who referred their family and friends to Matthew for a haircut, and vice versa. Why not just bring that into a shared space?

Hair Skin Club joins an existing network of Cal Poly alumni owned businesses as well. Matthew and Kelly both moved to San Luis Obispo to attend Cal Poly. Kelly earned a degree in Modern Languages and Literature while Matthew completed a Communication Studies degree.

While living on campus, Matthew started building a clientele cutting hair as a resident advisor. He leveraged the extra space in his room to set up a mini barber suite. What started as a simple way to connect with freshmen residents quickly turned into a dream of becoming a licensed barber. Years after graduating Cal Poly, he attended SLO Beauty College where he studied barbering.

Around the same time, Kelly began her beauty career doing bridal makeup across the Central Coast. Eventually, she attended Designs School of Cosmetology in Paso Robles where she studied esthetics. Though skin care appointments take up the majority of her schedule, Kelly continues to book weddings across the county.

Hair Skin Club currently offers a range of hair and skin services including: fades, mid-length haircuts, long haircuts, beard trims, Hydrafacials, makeup, tailored and spa-style facials. But most important, Matthew and Kelly are passionate about helping clients discover a hair and skin care routine that integrates into their lifestyle.

They offer monthly facial memberships and have plans to launch a membership for haircuts in the New Year. With 2 kids under 5 years old, they also offer haircuts for kids. As they look forward, there will likely come the day when a parent gets a facial while their child gets a haircut.
